Stericycle: Corporate history and financials
In a 1999 expansion,
Stericycle bought BFI Medical Waste, Inc. (part of Browning Ferris Industries) and the
medical waste incinerators in Haw River, NC became a Stericycle operation. In 2003 Stericycle made a
major investment upgrading their two Haw River incinerators. Continued operation allows them to recover this
investment and postpone the expense of a cleaner, alternative treatment facility. Company
headquarters are in Lake Forest, Illinois.
As a stock corporation, Stericycle has a rapidly growing global presence. In addition to expansion
across the United States, Stericycle has an increasing presence in Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Ireland and the United Kingdom.
With revenues clearly on the rise, Stericycle's stock (SRCL) has done quite well for it's stockholders.
The value of Stericycle stock has rocketed from
$3.30 per share in March 1999 to $54.62 in March 2008 (split adjusted).
According to Stericycle's own reports, "For the full year ended December 31, 2009, revenues were $1.18 billion, up 8.7% from $1.08 billion in 2008. Revenues increased 12.2% compared with prior year when adjusted for unfavorable foreign exchange impacts of $38.1 million. Gross profit was $552.4 million, up 13.9% from $485.0 million last year. Gross profit as a percent of revenues was 46.9%, up from 44.8% in 2008."
Despite very high profits, Stericycle has not tended to public and environmental concerns, as can be seen in
their history of permit violations at Haw River. They can afford
to make changes in the name of public health and the environment.
